Baylor of the Evil Eye (Celtic Tales); Nadine Crenshaw; Mass Market Paperback; $5.39; In the mythical worlds of the Sidhe (pronounced "she"), where the powerful elves of the Seelie Court constantly battle their powerful enemies of the Unseelie Court, an unwitting human is trapped in the no-man's-land of Faerie.

Celtic Art : From Its Beginnings to the Book of Kells; Ruth Megaw, Vincent Megaw; Paperback; $26.96; The fruit of more than 10 years of research and travel throughout Europe and the British Isles, here is the first single volume to provide a full survey of Celtic arts and crafts from 700 B.C. to A.D. 700. 452 illustrations, 24 in color.

coverThe Celtic Book of Days : A Daily Guide to Celtic Spirituality and Wisdom; Caitlin Matthews; Hardcover; $22.46;In Celtic tradition, spirituality is woven into and through the rhythms of daily life. Because the way we observe the unfolding year shapes the way we live, many have adopted the Celtic calendar strongly linked to natural elements and the seasons as a means of personal and spiritual discovery. The diverse writings and vibrant illustrations in this book have been carefully chosen to inspire daily reflection. Each month opens with a full-page illustration, and the daily entries are drawn from Celtic myth, poetry, prayers, and customs. Caitlin Matthews highlights the unique characteristics of each of the four Celtic festivals and the four magical gates of the year: Samhain (ancestral communion and introspection); Imbolc (beginnings and primal innocence); Beltane (creative and powerful expression); and Lughnasadh (maturity and consolidation).

Material from many eras of Celtic history is included to present both pagan and Christian streams of Celtic spirituality. The author has created new translations for many of the entries, including some material from rare and previously unpublished works. Throughout the book, full color art ranging from illuminated pages from the Book of Kells to modern illustrations highlight the text.

Midwest Book Review: The Celtic method of blending spirituality into everyday life is revealed in a collection of Celtic myths, prayers, lore and spiritual sayings based on the Celtic year. Enjoy an excellent, well-illustrated collection of Celtic wisdom which provides inspirational moments for each day.

Here Dr. Green uses the works of contemporary commentators from the Classical world, later Christian scribes recording oral traditions, and archaeological evidence to discuss Celtic myths and their religious beliefs and rituals. coverThe Celtic Year : A Month-By-Month Celebrationof Celtic Christia Festivals and Sites; Shirley Toulson; Paperback; $14.35; Lavishly illustrated throughout with pictures of famous sites and artifacts, maps, and line drawings, this beautifully-written volume is also a collection of prayers, poems, and songs, taken from the rich tradition of both the Celtic Christian and Druid traditions

coverThe Celts : Uncovering the Mythic and Historic Origins of Western Culture; Jean Markale; Paperback; $13.45; While historians have tended to accord the Celts a place of minor significance in comparison to the Romans, The Celts firmly aligns the Celtic peoples as the primary European precedent to the Greco-Roman hegemony, restoring this culture to its true importance in the development of European civilization. An expert in Celtic studies, Markale regards myth as a branch of history, and explores mythological material to reveal the culture that gave rise to it. The alternative historical vision that emerges is both convincing and exciting.

One of the most comprehensive treatments of Celtic civilization ever written. A cornerstone of Western civilization and the major source of its social, political, and literary values, Celtic civilization occupied the whole of Western Europe for more than a millennium. Unlike the Middle Eastern forerunners of the Greco-Roman world, Celtic civilization is still alive today.

Dictionary of Celtic Mythology (Oxford Paperback Reference); Peter Berresford Ellis; Paperback; $10.75; Articles ranging from a paragraph to a page identify and describe people, places, events, and concepts associated with the mythology of Celtic peoples. Like his 1989 similar treatment of Irish mythology, historian and novelist Ellis addresses the general reader, rather than the scholar, in clear and lively prose. The information from Ireland is here incorporated in less detail. He does an excellent job of identifying modern editions of the works the topics come from. Even the general reader, however, might appreciate a notice of which work a particular character appears in. In addition, any such dictionary that indicated, even generally, how to pronounce the names, would become a beloved classic to generations of popular readers.

Druids, Gods & Heroes from Celtic Mythology (World Mythology Series); Anne Ross, Roger Garland (Illustrator); Paperback; $13.45; Collected here in one volume are the myths, legends, and stories of the Celts from the most ancient Irish tales to the Arthurian saga. Richly illustrated with 18 full-color paintings and 40 line drawings, and complete with a guide to the symbols in the illustrations, and a pronunciation guide.

Elements of Celtic Tradition; Caitlin Matthews; Paperback; $8.95; The magic of Celtic tradition including its myths, stories, enchantment and magic practices, is studied here. Includes practical exercises drawn from the Celtic tradition.

The Encyclopaedia of Arthurian Legends; Ronan Coghlan; Paperback; $11.65; Coghlan, an acknowledged authority on the Celtic tradition, has drawn together all the different strands of Arthurian myth from such various sources as Geoffrey of Monmouth, Malory, Chretian de Troyes, and the English Gawain cycles. He examines every character appearing in the myths in this comprehensive book on the Arthurian tales. Full-page illustrations and period maps

The Encyclopaedia of Arthurian Legends; Ronan Coghlan; Hardcover; $17.06; Descriptive information available.

From Isles of Dream : Visionary Stories and Poems of the Celtic Renaissance; John Matthews (Editor); Paperback; $17.95; Works arising from Celtic traditions are presented in a title which includes poems and stories written by such notables as W. B. Yeats, George MacDonald and Henry Treece. This is an excellent, diverse, literary collection which should hold special interest and value to any interested in Celtic roots.

The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Arthurian Legends; Ronan Coghlan; Hardcover; $26.96; For more than 500 years, the epic adventures of King Arthur and his knights have been one of the most potent forces in English literature. This lavishly illustrated volume examines all the different strands of the Arthurian myth, bringing together a wide variety of materials, fully complemented by paintings, engravings, maps, and family trees.

The New Arthurian Encyclopedia (Garland Reference Library of the Humanities, Vol. 931) Vol 931; Norris J. Lacy (Editor); Paperback; $29.95; This is the new, updated edition of The New Arthurian Encyclopedia published in hardcover in 1991. As with the older version, it provides more than 500 new entries that cannot be found in the 1986 Arthurian Encyclopedia. The update also contains a 40-page section compiling the various addendums that have appeared in The Arthurian Yearbook since 1991. It is disappointing to note, however, that these new items were not incorporated into the main work.

Arranged alphabetically, the Encyclopedia remains the most invaluable reference resource for the Arthurian Legend. Each entry is written and signed by a scholar of Arthurian studies, and is followed, where necessary, by a short bibliography. The index is much easier to use than the one in the original volume. A must have for any collection.

The Quest for Arthur's Britain; Geoffrey Ashe (Editor); Paperback; $12.55; Most scholars now regard the legendary Arthur's reality as probable and accept "Arthurian Britain" as a meaningful historical term. Solid facts have emerged through the recent work of archaeologists. The Quest For Arthur's Britain examines the historical foundations of the Arthurian tradition, and then, in five archaeological chapters, presents the results of excavations to date at Cadbury (reputed site of Camelot), Tintagel, Glastonbury, and less-known places. An outline of Arthurian Britain takes shape, and several fascinating questions emerge. Were the Dark Ages in Britain a transitory, unimportant period? Or did the Celtic resistance against the Anglo-Saxons (a resistance identified with Arthur) have a profound effect on the development of the British Isles? The Quest For Arthur's Britain is a serious and informative work of scholarship that reads as smoothly as the finest fiction.

coverThe Raid; Randy Lee Eickhoff; Hardcover; $20.66; A dramatic retelling of Ireland's epic tale, The Raid explores wild pagan times in a magical narrative. When the Connacht invade his lands, a boy warrior stands between Ulster and certain annihilation. He soon begins a reign of terror upon the Connacht warriors, appearing out of the darkness to attack and kill.

coverThe Search for King Arthur; David Day; Hardcover; $22.46; A highly and colorfully illustrated, romantic and innocuous retelling of the most popular bits of the Arthurian legend. A useful feature might be a combination chronology and select bibliography from 1200 BC to the present, placing the primary renditions in time and in relation to each other. Also published as The Quest for King Arthur by Griffin House, London (1995). Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

Sellner, Susan McLean-Keeney (Illustrator); Paperback; $10.75; Faithfully presenting the lives and legacies of 20 Celtic saints of the 6th to the 9th centuries, Sellner reveals their wisdom in a way that can be understood and appreciated by contemporary readers. Vivid portrait illustrations by Susan McLean-Keeney add to the prayerful beauty of the book

The World of the Celts; Simon James; Hardcover; $26.96; Fantastic book on the origins of modern day Celts. One of the best books I've read on the history of the Celts, presented in a clear, easy to read format. Lots of photos and drawings, this book is a MUST for any student, serious or not, of Celtic history.

Contains little known facts of Celtic racial origins as well as discussions on Celtic language, religion and beliefs.
